Money vs. Social Conscience

  • Apr. 19th, 2008 at 12:44 PM
So I thought I got a real good deal on my secondhand books and videos I bought Thursday.  Then, today I discover (well, finally followed a link a friend sent me via email) Christian Books.com .  Initially I wailed at the waste!  Oh me, oh my!  "3:16" by Lucado for $3!!!  And I thought I got it at a good price for $16!!!  Sigh.   I checked the shipping and handling charges too...which often are more than the cost of buying it locally.  Shipping and handling to Canada is $7.50 for the one book.  I could have saved $6 overall.

On the other hand I'd prefer to support local businesses.  In the interests of simple living and global warming, I'd rather buy locally...and secondhand if possible.  Which I've done for the most part.  So while I've paid that extra $6, I feel I've done so with a free conscience.  The book is new, but the money goes to support inner city ministries.  The bookstore I purchased it from is a non-profit organization.   And, when I'm finished with the book I can always pass it on to our church library.

Sometimes I like to see how much good I can do when I acquire and disperse things.  It's kind of a game at this point...and it's fun!

N.B. The library didn't have "3:16" to borrow, and it takes months for them to order material in.  Otherwise, this would be the cheapest route to go...and one I'd take.

Tackle it Tuesday - Secondhand

  • Oct. 30th, 2007 at 10:24 AM
Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Today Paul and I are going to look on-line at local secondhand sofas.  We probably won't buy anything, but we're going to sit down and look together.  We have a ton more errands to do today.  He's off, so it's not a good day to tackle anything for me!  But I am wanting to solve this sofa issue.  Meghan badly wants one, and my back could use one.  It's just Paul and I cannot agree on what we like.  So this is a huge thing to tackle for us!  Talk to you later.

Check-in:  Well it finally came together.  We don't have a sofa yet, but we're closer to determining what we want.  We checked on-line and picked out two used ones to look at.  We looked at one this afternoon and found out it had a broken leg.  So we didn't buy that.

We decided to check out some furniture stores on the way home.  We stopped at one and liked the furniture but it was expensive.  Then we stopped at another one and loved the salesclerk.  She was just a hoot!  And so friendly.   She was really good about helping us narrow down what we wanted.  The problem is, we don't think they sell it.  But it was great to have someone help like that.  We did see one for $1000 that would work.

Because she was so good, we asked about beds and dining room tables.  We need them too.  She showed us a couple beds that were really good.  One I could go for in a flash...on sale from $2800 to $999.  And a headboard to go with it for $300.   Their dining room tables were nothing to write home about though.

We have another secondhand sofa to check out tonight.  Then we'll decide what to do.

I am so glad we came across that nice saleslady.  It makes all the difference in the world to have someone to help you sort through things and determine your preferences.  A good salesclerk is worth their weight in gold!

Second check-in! LOL:  We checked out the second hide-a-bed sofa and chair and bought it.  $200.  Now all we need to do is get some strong backs and a truck to move it.  That should keep us busy for the next while.
