Garage Sale Heaven!

There should be alarms attached to people prone to garage saling...to alert their family that their weekly 'gas or grocery or whatever' budget is in danger! The one nice thing about garage sales is they are all cash. Today it was raining. I limited myself to garage sales near my friend's daughter's  place. That meant I only visited three garage sales. The last one was a jackpot! Check out our new indoor grill!  It was $10...the lady had used it twice.  It was too big for her and came with manual and receipt.

And then I found additional pieces to my mom's daffodil silverware set by Rogers. The yellow looking stuff is Mom's (I added it). For some reason the stuff I bought looks more of silver colour...hmmm... The set and case were $10. I figure the case alone is worth that. I'm going to refinish it.

And finally, some cheap entertainment for Paul and I...

I found a puzzle for 50 cents. Can't beat the price!

I also picked up a ball of cream buffalo wool at this garage sale.  It'll make a nice hat.

I love garage sale season. It makes Paul real nervous though. He commented we were supposed to be downsizing. Hmmm...good point. I told him I had higher quality stuff than other people. I was being selective about what I took and kept. It didn't wash. Sigh. The thing is, I know he's right. I'll be going through my studio the rest of today...

Garage Sale Season

  • May. 30th, 2008 at 9:17 PM
Frugal Friday is all about garage sales.  I am having one right now.  A neighbor advertised and started yesterday.  She put an ad in the paper and had her teen-aged son run around the neighbourhood posting signs and parking their vehicle, with a sign, in a prominent spot.

She was bemoaning how boring it was to have a garage sale, and how much she hated it.  I had all this stuff in the basement to get rid of.  I'd tried to sell it on-line with no luck.  So, after talking to her to be sure it was okay if I horned in her advertising (I offered to split the cost of it, but she said no bother), I decided to have an impromptu garage sale.  Meghan helped me price things yesterday afternoon.  Today she helped me set things out and spelled me off when I needed bathroom and food breaks.  I had a great time chatting with my neighbour across the alley throughout the day.  It sure beats doing a garage sale alone.  I don't like them either that way.  I don't care if I sell a thing.  I'll have had a nice time visiting with my neighbor.

Garage sale tips...we price low.  We want the stuff gone.  If people won't buy it - there are such things as garage sale snobs who won't buy if they feel someone is undercutting someone else - then it just all gets loaded in the car and goes to goodwill at the end of the sale.  I am not one to hoard stuff in my garage forever.  I want it out.   I also don't have time to run around to garage sales all over town trying to figure out what 'the going rate' is on a particular item.  That's hogwash!  Either you want the stuff or you don't.  And if you don't, you'll price it so it sells.  And if it doesn't sell, then at least you get to choose which charity to give it to.

However, because this is a joint garage sale, and my neighbour was set up first, I double checked her pricing and didn't price below her on similar items.  Actually, we are selling different sorts of things altogether.  It's quite interesting.

In our part of town garage sales aren't very successful.  I wouldn't do this to make money, and if you order supper out, you probably won't make money!  But as a fun time with neighbors and just to meet people, it's great.  I managed to fit in some knitting too.

So I will be a little sparse on the Internet tomorrow...because I'll be setting out in the sun getting a sunburn selling off the last of my mom's stuff.

Update:

Well I spent two days at the garage sale and ended up earning all of $24.  Not much, but something.  More importantly, I sold half of the stuff I had, and the rest was taken to the goodwill after the sale.  PLUS, my neighbor and I had a good chance to get to know each other.  She's an extremely liberal person.  Quite an eye-opener for me.  I never quite know how to talk to people like that.  No matter what you say, they take offense to it.  Not only that, but they are extremely intolerant of Christianity.  Like I said, an interesting time garage saling!
